    A number small and some more involved Virtually Reality experiments are going in universities. The projects range from creating or leveraging 360 videos, experimentation pilots with the Ocolus Rift and Samsung Gear, to a few isolated project with the Microsoft's Hololens (which is referred to as Mixed Reality) A number of tablet/ smart phone and apps driven projects explore Augmented Reality. I see 3 distinct categories here: Virtual, Augmented and Mixed Reality. All of the above bring a different level of immersive learning opportunities that build on games, experiential learning, storytelling and visualization. While these continue to feel like isolated projects compared to other learning tech the interest along with discussions on possibly applications on campus are definitely on the rise.

    Agreed. The notion of immersive-media or immersive-telepresence with Oculus and others - is significant. I think VR as a concept is in our past and not on the horizon; but as a viable ubiquitous platform - it's something new and should be on the list.

    I'd like to see virtual reality on its own terms.
    Like virtual worlds, VR overlaps with gaming, but has many distinct elements.
    Plus the technology's state suggests VR will offer visualizations before it evolves into having enough power to do decent gaming.

    I was going to answer that virtual reality could to some extent be part of gaming and gamification - which, incidentally, is also not on the list (checked twice), so same question here: maybe gaming/gamification, too, is no longer considered to be a horizon technology? And indeed it was extensively featured in past reports, but I would still find it worth observing.

    I could well have missed it and can certainly see both 'Virtual and Remote Laboratories' and 'augmented reality' on these lists, but I don't see 'Virtual reality'? I would have thought that this type of technology was really beginning to come into its own and can think of several instances of its successful use in Australia. It may be that is no longer considered to be a 'horizon technology'?
